Are girls having sex at an earlier age?
Do you think girls are having sex at an earlier age than in past generations? I’ve heard that girls are experiencing puberty earlier and certainly they are exposed to more sex oriented material in commercials, on TV etc. than ever before. What do you think?

Probably. And I think it’s all the vitamins and such that we’re putting into kids that are making them grow faster.
Girls are starting puberty and hence thier periods at a younger age mainly due to nutrition. Menstruation is directly linked to weight. As a rule, girls start thier periods when thier weight reaches aproximately 100lbs. It’s why overweight girls start so much earlier than thier skinnier counterparts. Back in the day when nutrition wasn’t as good or access to enough food in general could be an issue, girls started puberty at a later age. As for sexual activity, I have two daughters, both teens. There were as many sexually active girls when I was a kid as thier are now. I don’t think the numbers have changed that drastically.
Of course in the 1800′s girls married at 14 and in my grandmother’s generation you were an old maid if you weren’t married by the time you were 19 or 20

I think they are exposed to much more than past generations. I mean look at fashion styles for pre-teens, it’s sickening. The thing is that teenage pregnancy is almost the same as what it was in the 50s but the only difference is that now the girls aren’t married and I think that is what bothers people the most.
Rushmore: I don’t think there’s any doubt about it. studies show that girls are hitting puberty at least two years earlier than they did 25 years ago. That, in and of itself, would result in more young women participating.
It seems that they are; I would expect it might have to do with perceived expectations from the media but also due to puberty hitting earlier. This isn’t the same for all girls in that situation of course (i.e. I hit puberty at 4th grade and didn’t become “active” until my early 20′s.. p.s. I was never overweight) but apparently it could be enough to swing the stats.
@aboutSHE - Looks like you might have swung both stats (entering puberty AND average age of activity) all by yourself!!! I was a late bloomer too.
And so when we were asking girls to remain a virgin until marriage – 100 years ago we were asking them to stay that way for a few years – today we would be asking them to stay that way for a couple of decades.
i dont know if girls are starting at an earlier age but i think they are getting more adventurous at an earlier age (multiple partners, metro sexual experiences, etc.)

and far more casual / non-relationship sex too
I am all for the teen exploration thing but to me the real problem is the flipant nature of their reaction to sex, when you hear a teenage girl say something like “it wasnt sex it was just a blow job” I am only 32 but I remember it was a BIG deal that one of the couples in my grade were having sex in grade 11.
sadly, yes. people in general are having sex earlier and more frequently.

It seems like younger people these days make it a point to lose their virginity before they graduate high school…personally I only know one girl who’s a virgin at 21. Even a younger girl I know lost hers at 14.
Needless to say, I lost mine when I was 17, three years ago, to a 16 year old, who also had sex first at the age of 14. It’s like being a virgin works against you when you’re younger.
t seems like they r. i was a freak among my friends for getting my period at 18 (well that rly is a little late, but still…) and entering puberly late, noticing boys later than other girls. i didn’t have my first kiss till i was 17 and a half and i didn’t have sex till half a year ago (i;ll be twenty in 15 days)…and all this made me a weirdo and a ‘prude’.
i;m not saying people should wait for marriage, cos i didn;t and i don;t believe in the concept…but i think at least till they’re 18 or sth…
well in my neighbor hood I knew 2 pregger girls and 1 with a baby by the time I was twelve, then in moving had 2 other girls (that I knew, there were more though) get pregnant… so the youngest a girl told me she had intercourse was 10…. yikes, she hadnt even started her lady time yet.
they are exposed earlier and know more but i don’t know if they’re having sex earlier than previous gens. studies have shown that girls who have had sex education early delay having sex. exposure to its dangers and consequences may prove to be a deterrent.
I wouldn’t think so. this generation seems so conservative in every way compared to back in the day.

Hm, I doubt it. I think things like this were just more hushed up back in the day and now we have to freak out over everything. But who knows? I may be wrong.

Just because they can and you don’t need to be married anymore to get some.
Sadly, yes, more and more girls are sexually active at younger age due to exposure to sex materials and the internet.

I think this is true! Everything I read seems to support that puberty and sexual activity are happening sooner than they used to. Especially the puberty part; that seems easier to measure, less shameful than the onset of the other used to seem. Me? I guess I’m not quite in the middle of the bell curve. I hit puberty nearly 14, which IS two years earlier than my mom started (she was starting to think she’d be sterile, she tells me). My husband was a late bloomer, too, though. I remember when his voice was still higher than mine back in high school. He “became a man” at 15. Sexual activity was later than average, too. I was 20 and he was 19.

I agree that it is. I’ll even admit I did but there are other factors in here. I know and have seen girls dressing skimppy just because of what they see on tv. And I’m sorry, but wearing tights under mini skirts still doesn’t hide anything and its even slutty. I have to drive by a jr.high everyday to get to school and I see the girls try to look like 17 when their only 12-14. Its insane. It makes me wonder how many of them are active in sexual matter, and how many of them even know what their doing?! My niece is even trying to get into it and its embarrasing when she wears that stuff at family gatherings. I have to say that its getting to far.
Its not just media as well but parents to. Is the school now in charge to teach our kids? I remember haveing that stupid sit down with my dad and mom about the birds and the bees. It makes me wonder if anyone is trying to teach the next generation. We may be coming out of the baby boomer age, but it makes me wonder if were going back in with all these teen pregos popping up.
I think we are, but I also think it’s not so taboo, or hush-hush anymore. So they might have been having sex at a younger age, they just weren’t as open about it.

I just have to say, when you look at pre-1900s in the U.S. and at different cultures around the world, not overly. Girls were getting married at 13 in parts of this country historically. Was this good for the girls? I don’t think so.

Yes they are, and the ones that want to hold off are teased, and made to feel crapy!
I think in the mideval times and know girls who are young are having sex!
Back in the day when I was growing up most girls were having sex by 15, and boys as soon as they possibly could!
